Sarzana is a lively town on the Ligurian coast, very close to the villages of the Gulf of Poets and to the Cinque Terre area. It is very well-known for the many antiques shops and restorers’ workshops. Nontheless it is a very active and contemporary city, a place to visit if you happen to hang around Lunigiana.
The car-free city center is perfect for a stroll and a shopping sessions from one shop to the other [we should not say that but the Atelier Thanks Dad and SLAP design shop are among our favorite!]. We invite you to find out more by walking with us, delving into its art, historical heritage, food and artisan traditions. We will be starting from the Firmafede Fortress – also known as Cittadella, a colossal bulk concealed behind a curtain of rooftops, at the eastern end of Sarzana’s historical center.
The tour continues toward S. Maria Assunta Cathedral, that nestles the most ancient crucifix in the history of art – the so called Croce di Maestro Guglielmo – and above all the relic of the Precious blood of Jesus Christ. We will be continuing toward Piazza Matteotti, where a few gorgeous building front onto the liveliest square in town. Among them, Parentucelli’s Mansion, home for the family that gave birth to Pope Niccolò V. A stop at the Pasticceria Gemmi is a must do, to taste the typical spongata tart or just to visit the king of liberty-style café. Join us, our lovely guide Giulia will accompany you through the story and culture of Sarzana!
