Property Description

Sleeps 2 to 7
Sarzana, – Cinque Terre -– Liguria

Comfortably sleeping 2 to 7 persons, this old, converted farmhouse, lies on the border between eastern Liguria and northern Tuscany, just a stone’s throw from the Cinque Terre. It has been carefully restored and renovated, to offer all the comforts, including a wonderful outdoor pool. The interior design is characterized by antique furnishings and decorative paintings, lovingly chosen by the owner, to remain in stylish keeping with the traditional architectural context. Set in a privileged position on a hillside, surrounded by chestnut, cherry and olive trees, the villa affords superb views, which embrace both the Apuan Alps inland and the shimmering waters of the Mediterranean sea from the islands of La Spezia gulf to the lighthouse of Livorno port. This whole area enjoys a pleasant temperate micro-climate, while the villa itself boasts a suntrap location, basking in sunshine throughout the day. Its idyllically quiet seclusion will ensure that your stay really is out-of-this-world!

Entrance to this unique property is at ground-floor level from the brickwork porch with wooden beamed ceiling, perfectly equipped to eat outside with wooden table and benches. It has its own barbecue/wood burning oven ideal to prepare wonderful dinners. From the porch you enter the fitted kitchen with its original Carrara white marble worktops and sink of attractive rustic design and completed by all the modern appliances (dishwasher; fridge; American coffee-maker). The living/dining room features an ancient slate fireplace and comfortable sofas, whose colour-scheme harmoniously complements the traditional Tuscan stone and terracotta floors. 17th century-style table with benches and chairs grace the dining area. Proceeding to the right the former lemon house has been transformed into a comfortable guest bedroom with double wrought iron bed. The room is incredibly luminous and bright thanks to the large window which extends across one wall and offers breathtaking views over the gulf of la Spezia and the Tuscan coast with Forte dei marmi and even further south. The hallway is completely covered with books and it leads to the two bedrooms and bathrooms.

From the hallway you can access the separate two bedroom suite which includes one luminous double bedroom furnished with antiques and completed by the ancient wooden parquet floor which makes it even warmer and welcoming, one single bedroom with original cotto floors and a glass door to the balcony offering spectacular views. The suite is completed by a small but delicious private bathroom with shower which wasn’t changed to maintain the original characteristics of the house. A cosy paintings exposition corner introduce you to the Ardesia (local stone) stairways decorated with a wooden library which accompany you upstairs where the last romantic isolated double bedroom and bathroom with bathtub await you.  The villa offers TVsat, CD-player and Internet access, high-quality Flanders’ linen sheets and bedcovers, as well as embroidered towels and bathrobes are likewise all provided.

In addition to these, the warm waters of the enticing outdoor pool invite you to bathe at leisure amid beautiful natural surroundings, bordered by orchards and aromatic plants. The owner Francesca lives in another villa restored from an old barn only about 100 metres away with her mother Letizia who spends part of the year in Egypt and part of the year in Liguria. The breathtaking vistas and unequalled beauty of the flowers and the tree of “ Villa Ortenasia” were supplied by the God. The perfect order and harmony of the rare furnisching and art reflect the extraordinary taste and discretion of Senora Letizia and her family. The generosity and grace of senora Letizia and her lovely daughters made our family’s visit unforgettable. Grazie Letizia

My family recently spent a week staying in Villa Ortensia. It was one of the loveliest weeks of our vacation because it provided a home to come back to at the end of a day of sightseeing. The completely redone stone house itself was beautifully done, with intense attention to detail. The owner has filled the house with beautiful antiques and it looks authentic to its period. She even filled the house with helpful maps and guides and language dictionaries. The owner was on vacation the week we were there and left her daughter to look after us. She was gracious and fun, and we loved her welcoming and open personality. It was such a delight to come back at the end of the day to a bag of freshly picked cherries that Francesca would leave in a bag by the door. And then there was the sweet dog that my daughter had so much fun playing with. My husband and I had different views about the location. I loved it since the house sits at the top of a hill at the end of the road, giving us complete privacy and a spectacular view. It also felt like being a part of a regular village rather than a touristy location. The neighbors all lived there and would wave to us as we went by. It was a great springing off spot to the Cinque Terra, and the Apuan mountains and the local beaches. It thought it was all perfect. My husband hated driving up the narrow winding road to get there, honking along the way to let the other cars know we were coming. Despite the drive tho, it was hard to disagree that this was a one of a kind place to be.

Thank you, Francesca and Letizia, for making our stay at La Casetta, Villa Ortensia, so welcoming, relaxing and enjoyable. From the moment we arrived to see those wonderful panoramas for the first time to the moment we left embracing Letizia and Kruge, we felt so much part of your wonderful family. Of course, the weather was superb, the food was delicious, the swimming pool was stunning, the countryside was breathtaking, but it was the extra personal touches that made the holiday for us. The basket of apricots, the invitation to dinner, watching together ‘gli azzurri’ beat Ukraine on TV, driving down the hill afterwards to celebrate the win with the ‘contadini’, the hushed conversations around the pool, the tour of Letizia’s art museum: these are the things that will stay in the memory and will draw us back to this wonderful place and its equally wonderful owners. Much love Peter and Louise

Hi Francesca: Just a note to tell you how much we enjoyed our week at Villa Ortensia. We arrived the day after a huge storm had hit the area, damaging electric lines to the TV satellite and the water heater. After our somewhat harrowing drive up that narrow winding country road in our huge van, we were looking forward to a hot shower. However, Francesca and Letizia handled the problem quickly, getting someone up that evening to fix the water heater. And by Monday we had TV! In any case, we settled in to the villa, enjoying the lovely antiques and artwork displayed all around the villa. The furnishings were comfortable as well as being attractive, and the beds were extremely luxurious (we shall miss those wonderful bed linens!). It was perfect having the privacy of the villa in the peaceful Legurian hills to retreat to after each day’s explorations of villages and towns nearby. And I enjoyed long walks most every morning, exploring the nearby roads and meeting some of the neighbors. Villa Ortensia is wonderfully located for those day trips to Pisa, Lucca, Carrera, Lerici, Montemarcello, Portovenere, Cinqueterra –and we explored the local village of Sarzana as well, learning where to buy our bread, cheese, and other groceries. Francesca and Letizia were so helpful and gracious—daily gifts of cherries, lettuce from the garden, or fresh eggs from the hens–helped to make our stay very pleasant. And we appreciated having the kitchen so well stocked with supplies, condiments, etc. So nice not to have to buy those essentials when only staying a week. Another amenity that we really appreciated was having our laundry so nicely done and Francesca allowing us occasional use of her computer for communication to our families back home. The views from the villa are amazing; you are truly way up above the town in a wonderful country setting. It is a little piece of heaven! Much as we may have liked to sit all day on the terrace enjoying the views, we did want to get out each day and see as much as possible, and Francesca was an excellent source of information—for places to visit and restaurants. Thank you, Francesca, for recommending this villa to us. It was perfect–we hope to visit again before too long, and next time we will NOT drive a 9 passenger van. They are just too big for the village and country roads of Italy. However, we had six people and their luggage to transport the first week we were in Italy, so we were stuck with that van! Our best wishes and thanks again to Letizia, Francesca, and their friendly guard dog, Kruk (sp?). Sincerely

Then we drove to Francesca’s beautiful Villa Ortensia. We made a couple of stops along the way in Viareggio and Marina di Massa. Her personal welcome was actually overwhelming. She is THE NICEST Italian person we met during our trip. We felt welcome and special to be staying in her house. Everything was there for laundry, dishes etc. We are very surprised that she prepared a few goodies in the fridge and offered a bottle of wine. We didn’t even have to leave that evening to get more food. The villa is very well equipped and so peaceful that we ended up spending more time at the house than going touring. We were really sad to be leaving her villa and her too. She took so much pride and it sure made us feel special and like we wanted to be extra careful not to damage anything. She really is a one of a kind! The first villa was excellent but if we had stayed at Ortensia first and at Maria after, we would have been disappointed because Francesca made us feel so welcome. Ah, now we are back for almost one week already. The kids are almost adjusted back to Canadian time though we still get up before 6am. We disconnected to so much in Italy that it is difficult to get back into our Canadian reality. I would like to thank you for your recommendations, especially of Villa Ortensia. Our trip was awesome.

We had two superb weeks in the villa with high temperatures and clear blue cloudless skies. We were met by Francesca on arrival as arranged and she left us some food and drink for our first night which was very kind. The villa had every amenity that we required, very good sized rooms, a large kitchen and outdoor dining area as well as indoor dining areas and a large sitting room. As the weather was so good we made great use of the pool altjough we did travel to do some sightseeing visiting Pisa and Cinque Terre both less than an hour’s drive away. We also visited the beach at Carrara. The villa was spotlessly clean with good quality furniture and plenty of amusments with Sky tv, wi-fi etc. The villa is reached via a winding, single track hillside road but as villa is near the top of a large hill the views are worth the drive being spectacular, with far views accross the nearby villages to the sea. This results in wonderful sunsets and the view to the lights of the town of Sarzana below. Families with very small children would need to be careful of the pool and take care with the furniture, especially any glass fronted units

Francesca, Thank you for a wonderful week at Villa Ortensia. We have had wonderful hot weather and thank goodness for the lovely swimming pool. The kids haven’t really wanted to go anywhere, be we have ventured to the Cinque Terre (avoid the famous 20-minute walk that everyone does and walk another part of it — also best seen from the sea!), the beach, Pisa and Sarzana’s lovely market of narrow streets. Feeling very relaxed and sun kissed. All the best,

Dear Francesca, The Boulton family has had a wonderful stay at Villa Ortensia. We have felt at home and enjoyed this sunny and hot weather–such a lovely change from grey and rainy England! We have taken photographs of the beautiful views, red sunsets and twinkling lights of the night scenes across Sarzana and beyond. They will be happy memories of the good time we have had here. Thank you for making us welcome and comfortable in your gorgeous house. Grazie!

Perfect… absolutely what we needed! It was perfect for what we needed but would could have brought many friends or family and still could have found privacy. The views are spectacular, the house is immaculate and our host was wonderful! We had big plans to go check out different areas near by but in the week that we were there we only left twice because we were so happy right where we were. The grocery is very close, just down the hill and the kitchen is amazing. Francesca had snacks and wine ready for us with our late arrival and the kitchen was stocked with every spice. We cooked in and lounged by the pool. It was exactly what we needed. You will love this home if you need a break from the hustle and bustle. We hated to leave but can’t wait to return with friends. “Absolutely, I would recommend this accommodation to my best friend!”

“Beautiful Villa” Our stay at Villa Ortensia exceeded our expectations. The place is very peaceful and quiet The house has a personal touch, is well equipped, very convenient and beautiful. The location is on a mountain with a beautiful view. It is very easy to go by car to Cinque Terre, Portovenere och beautiful Sarzana by car. We stayed most of our days by the wonderful pool in the garden but did also do excursions by car. The owner Francesca provided extra ordinary service and was always at help if needed. I would absolutely recommend this house and will most likely visit Villa Ortensia again.

” Wonderful House in the hills” Francesca the owner is the perfect host and has an obvious love and passion for this house. We very much appreciated her friendly welcome and the welcome snacks she left. I was staying there with my husband and two adult sons and the four of us fell in love with this house. Its location is on a hilltop with wonderful views of the surrounding coast and hills. We enjoyed spending time at the house with its lovely gardens and especially the outside dining area. Though we did venture off to visit Sarzana, Portovenere and the Cinque Terre we were more than happy to return. The kitchen is very well equipped and we had fun cooking together. Inside the house is beautifully decorated with lots of interesting paintings and artifacts. A perfect house for a peaceful, relaxing holiday. We hope to return.

“Beautiful House and garden with stunning views” We were welcomed by Francesca who was very friendly and hospitable and had organised food and drink for when we arrived which was very nice after a long journey. The house was beautiful, full of lovely furniture and paintings which gave the house a very personal feel. The pool was great and the house had fantastic views overlooking the sea and our local town where we had some lovely dinners! The only slight down side was the journey up to the house which would take a good 10 minutes on a rather winding from the main road. This was initially a little daunting but we soon got used to it! Overall a beautiful house and garden and we had a great holiday and were sad to leave! Thank you Francesca!

Dear Francesca Thank you for the wine and pastries you left us, very welcoming and very tasty ! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Ortensia taking the opportunity to relax in the pool and gazing at the wonderful views which we cannot describe in words adequately. The weather was perfect especially for us from less than sunny England . We took the opportunity to visit Cinque Terre and also the lovely Lerici but mostly we enjoyed Villa Ortensia and eating some wonderful home cooked very fresh food, sampling the local wines and being truly relaxed. Thankyou again. The Archers from England. Recommended for: Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway

“Stunning family villa exceeds expectations!” We stayed at Villa Ortensia for a one week family reunion and could not have found a more perfect place to enjoy the Cinque Terre and surrounding area. Francesca was so warm, welcoming, enthusiastic and helpful, making our holiday a total delight. Our excursions in the area were all wonderful but the best part was being at this beautiful villa, enjoying the breathtaking views and refreshing pool. The drive up the hill with its hairpin turns was challenging and fun! (Our adult sons who did most of the driving particularly enjoyed that part but it may not be for everyone.) The villa is immaculate and filled with antiques and everything one could possibly need. High quality linens and a thoroughly equipped kitchen were a pleasure to use. It’s even more beautiful than the pictures suggest. It felt authentic as it is a true family home. We do not hesitate to highly recommend Fransesca’s villa for any group looking for a true Italian vacation experience.

“Heaven on heart!” Charming does not begin to describe this beautiful place and neither can words. From the moment we arrived we knew this was a special place. The owner, Francesca was wonderful to work with in the planning, arriving and during our stay. The house itself is so very comfortable and beautiful at the same time. Every detail has been thought of. The kitchen was so well equipped we loved cooking in it and having our dinner outside by candlelight. The views from the house are amazing. The linens are beautiful and the artwork, furniture and decorations are right out of a magazine. Francesca is the nicest host and had typical ligurian food waiting for us along with a bottle of delicious wine, which was great because we just settled in and enjoyed the first night in this beautiful place without having to go out for supplies. We couldn’t believe she even rents the place. Our family has stayed in many rental homes over the years, but Villa Ortencia is by far the best kept, best appointed and most comfortable and welcoming place. The road up is a little treacherous but it is worth it for the comfort and beauty. A previous reviewer said Francesca must be the nicest person in Italy and my family and I agree

“Wonderful oasis in Italy” My husband and two adult children stayed at this beautiful villa for a week and it was wonderful. The villa is in perfect condition, beautifully decorated and every detail seen to. Francesca was the most wonderful host and great to work with. Her home is amazing. We all agreed we would never rent this villa if it was ours, but we are so glad she does. It is equipped with everything you might need. She even greeted us with typical ligurian food and a nice bottle of wine for our first night, which was great because we didn’t have to out to get supplies. The house and decor is so beautiful you can’t help but look around and feel like you are in a museum. The bed linens were so cozy and the towels nice and big. The views were amazing from every angle and we spent many a night enjoying wine and looking at the view. We also really enjoyed cooking and eating al fresco by candlelight and thinking how lucky we were to have found Francesca and Villa Ortensia. The road up is a little tough but it is well worth it to call this place home for a week. Thank you, Francesca, for sharing your beautiful home with us.

“Splendid stay in Villa Ortensia” Dear Francesca, our stay in villa Ortensia was splendid. Your warm welcome and help has been very much appreciated. Everything in the house and garden of villa Ortensia was perfect. The house is very clean and well furnished. The three library sections are a luxury. The house provides many attractive sections such as the bedrooms, bathrooms, living area, kitchen and covered outdoor dining section with barbecue. The garden is gorgeous with the trees, grass, and furniture. The lovely swimming pool has crystal clear water. The views from the garden are really spectacular: one sees the sea, the city of Sarzana, another typical little mountain village, and, last but not least, beautiful mountains. We will never forget the special evening that you and your son prepared us a delicious diner in villa Ortensia, to celebrate our 40-year wedding anniversary. We will recommend villa Ortensia to all our friends and family. Thanks!

“Fabulous Mountain Top Villa” The Villa was fantastic, large, clean, beautiful. The view was amazing – you could see the sea. The grounds were wonderful including the pool. The outdoor dining area was great. Our host could not have been better. The location, near Cinque Terre, Florence… was perfect. We were so pleased with the Villa and our stay
